I was commissioned to paint a 13 year old girl's room all zebra striped! I had never painted any sort of print like this on a wall before, so I was really excited to give it a go!

Started off with 4 different thumbnails that the family could look at. Everyone had a different opinion, but it came down to what "J", the young girl, wanted. She picked #3.
So I got to it! I sketched the lines out by hand, and I just had at it with the paint!

For a first time painting on a wall like this, I'd say it didn't come out too shabby!

I'm definitely willing to do this again! Apparently now all of "J"'s friends want a cool animal print accent wall. haha.

"Let This One Be a DEVIL!"

The Jersey Devil was born to "Mother Leeds", a supposed whore. Already a mother of 12, Mother Leeds grew weary of childbirth and motherhood. In a passing moment of exasperation and annoyance during her pregnancy, she proclaimed "LET THIS ONE BE A DEVIL!"
When Mother Leeds finally went into labor, nothing out of the ordinary immediately happened. She gave birth to a seemingly healthy and normal baby boy. A few moments passed and the child began making hideous crying noises, and began to rapidly grow and transform into a devil-like creature. It suddenly attacked, killing Mother Leeds and the midwives in attendance . It escaped into a conjoining room and murdered most of the other 12 children. The few children who lived, lived to spread the tale and warning of the Jersey Devil. Legend has it, after destroying most of it's siblings, it tore off into the night and into the pine barrens, where it lives to this day. Take care driving through the Jersey Pine Barrens at night, the Devil loves to play with and torment passing cars.

Today, I became the coolest kid ever.

This is technically the "negative" image.
I designed it to be printed on a black surface, with a white or gold paint.
I'm buying a sleek black dress to print this on, so I can wear it to my last Phantom show before I move!

“A grand gala was to be held this night as a retirement party for the opera’s managers, Monsieur Debienne and Monsieur Poligny. The celebration would include various operatic renditions company’s boorish diva, La Carlotta. It would also mark the arrival of the new managers, Monsieur Richard and Monsieur Moncharman.

“Good heavens!” Exclaimed M. Debienne as he and M.Poligny briskly walked down the hall. “Welcome to l’Opera Garnier!” He said grabbing each man’s hand enthusiastically. “We are so very glad you are finally here! We cannot wait to show you everything. Shall we begin with-“

Suddenly the greeting was interrupted as flew a man came sprinting towards them.

“My managers, La Caroltta has fallen ill!” the man frantically panted.

Poligny groaned and massaged his temples. “I cannot wait to be rid of this whole damned business!” He growled.

“Come, Come now, everything is fine!” bellowed Debienne, shooting Poligny a dangerous look, “Fetch the understudy!”

The red-faced man nodded and scampered away as quickly as he came.

Debienne turned to M. Moncharmin and M. Richard. “Ah, ha gentleman.” He chortled nervously, “Not a common occurrence, I assure you! Shall we proceed?”

Whatasuprise.
I'm going to attempt to be the Phantom for halloween!

Well... the ALW... version. Which is cool.

It's "hopefully" going to be awesome.

I really want to go full out and make it the most authentic costume I possibly can. This is why I covered my face in alginate, and why there is plaster of paris all over my shoe... it's because I'm dedicated...
I'm making the Phantom prosthetics from scratch, to fit my face, just so its absolutely PERFECT.
I really just need to prove to myself I'm capable of doing this and doing this well.
I want to maybe... one day...mayyybbbeee.... do this for a living.

**There will be a better photo of the sculpture soon. Mac books aren't the greatest when it comes to pictures.**
I will probably end up going more severe and theatrical with the sculpture now that I plan to be doing it in FOAM LATEX or whatever... Keep your eyes peeled for the BETTER version.

It came out only okay... but it will serve its purpose as a prosthetic-building base.

The little photoshop painting of the AMNH's "Nootka Spirit Bear" Exhibit.
We had to use only 10 colors and paint a portrait of something on photoshop. It will later be converted into illustrator and be made all clean and snazzy. :)

It took a little under three hours to complete this rough... I will most likely fiddle around with this before the final "conversion"

Check this guy out if you visit the Museum. He's super cool and the ritual he was part of is REALLY amusing!

The face of a new, bright, and shining semester. :|

No. This is really just the face of web design class.

This is the first semester of the BFA for me and my peers, and boy am I ready!
I really love all the OTHER classes so far, I swear. I have wonderful professors and all of the classes are going to be fun and challenging.
The work load hasn't quite hit me yet, but we're getting there... I can feel it coming.
I really plan on kicking butt in every aspect of my life this year. Art, body, mind aaaannd cooking skills!

I'm ready to art LIKE CRAZY. Heres to a new semester!

The Real Elephant God

This is the first oil painting I've done since high school, and to be honest, I don't know why it's taken so long for me to use them again.

This was somewhat inspired by this Magic Card; Loxodon Hierarch.
The card sorta disturbed/inspired me. I kept calling the figure in the card "The Elephant God", so I decided to do a painting of my own Elephant God.

Yup, okay.

I consider this one a rough, mainly because its done on a SUPER shitty and rough plank of wood. It was hard to refine the painting the way I wanted...
Ah well, I'm going to pick up some smoother boards later today/week and do two portraits of the Elephant Gods on them. One will be an African Elephant and one an Asian Elephant.

In other news, I'm an art teacher! How about that?
I'll be teaching adults how to paint and draw multiple days a week at this snazzy art store; PJ Art Company

I saw my good friend Alex Krokus last night. I got some neat pictures of his wonderful band Wood Spider
I had a fantastic time and throughly enjoyed myself.
Seeing them play and hearing Alex's stories, it really got me to thinking about my own way of living and how I ought to change it. I've become so bitter and lifeless living in Manhattan, It's hard for me to stay motivated and trudge through the rest my four years here.
I need to find out what makes me tick, and what inspires me, some passion to dedicate my life to. I haven't found it yet. I love my art, but I'm tired of being told the world is going to break me if thats what I'm going to love and do.
Alex is the prime of example of doing what you love, and not letting anything get in your way of doing it. Find a way to make it happen and just do it!

In addition to Alex's tales of wonderful, like-minded people across the country, I also picked up a 'zine he'd been working on with his wonderful girlfriend, Fanny.
It's about a the counterculture of seed sharing, organic farming and the importance of seed banks in the act to preserve our natural crops and culture. It's beautifully written and Illustrated and I HIGHLY recommend getting a copy!

Stephen Gardner: The Figure Drawing Saga

It's been an awful long time since I uploaded any work. It's unfortunately been due to an awful art slump. I've only just recently began turning it around... ever so slowly.
Every figure drawing class up until this week has been equally painful to rubbing my face with a hot iron and about a frustrating as nailing jello to a tree.
Though, this week proved to show some promise and fun.
Not to mention our new wonderful professor, Stephen Gardner! What a delightful surprise to find out he was taking over for Dorothy (though I miss Dorothy dearly and wish her my best).

Anyway, the class has been extremely fun and I can already see more strength my drawings. I'm enjoying it, its been unlike any other drawing class I've had.
Anywho here are some of the drawings I've done recently:

Anyway, I hope things continue to go upward.

Here are some recent projects I've finished!
I apologize for not updating with anything substantial in awhile.

These are projects for school, excluding Bison piece.

The lovely Beatles, Rendered in gouache. Our "Premier or Grand Opening" project.
I decided to depict the Beatles arrival in the states for the first time. :)

A few friends of mine and I were coming up with the various scenarios that went on in each others heads. Some of them were quite hilarious and were deemed worthy of an illustration. I will defiantly be doing more of these when I have the time. (This one will eventually be a hyper rendered oil painting as well.)

In his mind, he is wild bison running merrily with giraffes as Old Glory flaps in the wind behind him.

Another piece for school. We had to design a beverage ad that advocated halloween parties and such.
I decided to base mine on the Dia de los Muertos celebration.
I started off with acrylic, and switched over to gouache. Oh dear, I need to escape from gouache.

Aborigines and Didgeridoos

For the past week and a half there has been an on going party at my friend Zach's house. There has been a constant flow of amazing people coming to stay and party.
There was one day where we pooled all our money and tried to throw a fantastic and wild party. This was the The Aborigine Party.
The idea was we'd cook food in the ground, cover our bodies in paint, play drums and didgeridoos and dance around a massive bon fire.
It... um... didn't quite turn out like we planned.
Our food didn't cook, we didn't play any instruments and our fire failed.
Aside from that, it was really fun, but it could hardly be called an Aborigine party. We will hopefully be attempting another one soon.

Note Worthy Occurrences

Today was the official last day of my first year of college. Good thing too, one more week of this and I probably would've died.
My last day consisted of Willocks Waffles (I couldn't think of a clever way to combine the two.), hobo naps, milkshakes and heartfelt goodbyes. All of that, and one of the worst LIRR experiences, ever. I am so ready to sleep... but before I do, I wanted to share a few little things.

First order of business is Sal/Zach.
When my friend Zach puts on stylish sunglasses he strongly resembles a young Sal Catalano.
Or... at least I think he does...

One of the best days from this year, I believe. Some of the kids from the "new" block and I went to Janis Salek and Karen Santry's art gallery. It turned into an epic trek across the Brooklyn Bridge which concluded in a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. It was a lot of fun. I'm really going to miss these guys over the summer!

The assignment was to illustrate a song or a fairy tale. I chose the Decemberists (surprise, surprise!) Hazards of love I.

Heres a detail shot. Margaret looks like shes crying in pain instead of being... surprised. :/

A friend of mine wanted a tattoo of a Platypus in a top hat. Here are the doodles!

This is the design she went with.

This one was my personal favorite, though. I named him Sir Alexander Platsburg after Alex DeLarge from A Clockwork Orange. I wanted him to have a voice similar to that of Malcolm McDowell.

I've been on a Hazards of Love kick since it came out. I'm absolutely obsessed with the lyrics and the sheer masterful craftsmen ship of this album. So, i decided to illustrate a scene from the album for my project.

Stamp Project. Paint a famous landmark of the city. I chose the Mercury statue on top of Grand Central.

I FUCKIN LOVE THE DECEMBERISTS.

Seriously, I love them more then any band in the world, and I had the privilege to see them live at Terminal 5 Last week. My god, they were so wonderful. I also really, really enjoyed Loch Lomond. They opened for The Decemberists, and they were really fantastic and quite interesting (different, in a really nice way!)
The concert was definitely the best i've ever seen.
I cannot wait for their new album "Hazards of Love" to be released. April 2009!

God, sorry guys! I've been dead for the longest time!

I don't have many pictures and scans, well because, that takes more effort.

HOLY COW FLASH PAINTING. FIT is awesome. this guy came out of nowhere and asked me to paint with him. this is a little portion of my corner. XD Acrylic fun times.

I wonder where that painting went... XD

Mmm, in class model. four hour classes with Jane Bixby weller are always exciting. The crazy old woman loves my stuff. ( I say crazy with so much love and respect!)

That Mask if for my friend's halloween costume, he is going to be Leslie Vernon for Halloween.

I made the mask out of plaster bandages. molded it to the wearer and then once dry, sanded the sucker down so it was smooth and fit semi- loosely on the wearer for comfortable wearing. I painted the thing in acrylics, and I am SOO in love with it. <3

Life has been alright, but cash is tight.
I need commissions and I need them asap.

So. It's my friend Alex's birthday.
We discovered the movie Behind the Mask the Rise of Leslie Vernon.
And its one of the best movies I ever saw. We love it.
So I decided to make her a Leslie card.
I think hes wonderful!
Totally check this movie out, you'll love it if you love horror/witty/comedic movies.
its epic and totally not conventional!

I drew the card on a bit of card stock with the wonderful prisma inky pens I got for my birthday a week ago!
It's such a dark and creepy birthday card... XD

Self Portrait! I was really bored one day, and just decided to draw my face. So i sat infront of a mirror... took maybe a half an hour...
XD for some reason, my teacher is in love with it. It has been featured in a lot of art shows...

This guy was a commission for a tattoo design! I love him! I named him Sir Alexander!
The character was born from a friend of a friends dream, and they wanted him tattoo'd onto them! I don't know if they ever got it done... but the loved the design!

This is kinda what I visualized when I listened to the song "light my fire" by The Doors. I used Watercolor, marker, ink, and some gouache for this piece. Its pretty small, like, maybe 8 1/2 by 11

A scene from a cafe in Greenwich village! These are two friends of mine. I loved the moment, so I decided to illustrate it. I love their expressions.
This was done in colored pencil, this again is a rather small piece.

This was a assignment given to me. We had to look at Robert Rauschenberg's work and create a self portait reflecting his multimedia style. This is what I created. To this day, i'm still very proud of the piece! This is a large work... I'd say 13inches by something.... XD I created this with Acrylic gloss medium and lots of elbow grease... or finger grease...? XD
